Call for suggestions

We are t-minus four days until departure, and our itinerary is still up in the air to some extent. I'm posting today to ask for suggestions of things to do and places to eat and stay when we're in the South. We have lists of activities and sites, but could always use the advice of someone who has been there before.

Of course, suggestions are welcome throughout the journey, as well.

  1. Hey, it's Mateo! What a great trip you have planned. As a fellow non-Southerner who is fascinated by the South, I gotta say that this trip is one I hoped to take while at GDub. I did parts though and recommend a couple of things. In Richmond, go to the Museum of the Confederacy and the Southern White House. It's really crazy to see the "War of Northern Agression" through the south's eyes... Also, there are creepy reenactors there (Reamonn and I have a picture or two to prove just how creepy they are). Also, Carytown is a great part of Richmond with some great walking around, etc. Bev's Ice Cream (2911 West Cary Street, Richmond) is in my top 5 ice cream experiences ever, and you know that means a lot because I used to be fat.

  2. Hi Rachel! I'm sorry for the delay, but I just got a comprehensive list of Savannah and Charleston suggestions from my sister. I hope you're having a great trip! Here goes:

    Chucktown:

    Sermets Corner (mediterranean)
    Rue de Jean (french)
    Basil (Thai)
    Chai's (Happy Hour/tapas)
    AW Shucks (seafood)
    Charleston grille (american)
    East bay deli
    Kickin Chicken
...those are off the top of my head

    Avoid Hymans!!!!! Tourist Trap!!!!

encourage them to take a gullah tour...much better than the awful and usually historically incorrect carriage rides

    Savannah:

    in no particular order...

    1. Paula Deen's restaurant
    2. her brother Bubba's restaurant (which is about 15-20 minutes away but worth its travel in fried pickles!)
    3. shrimp factory (or just about any restaurant on river street...btw you can have open containers on river street)
    4. casbah moroccan restaurant
    5. pink house ($$$ but really good food and service)
rickshaw rides are fun and a bit edgy and you pay what you want...
